This season is a record breaker for golfers at Forest Dunes in Roscommon, MI according to Don Helinski, Director of Operations.
“Golf is one activity people could do during the pandemic, and they are now fully reengaged with the game. The notoriety of the two courses here and where they fit on the national scale means golfers are coming from all over the country to play at Forest Dunes.”
The Loop is a unique course. Opened in 2016, it is a one-of-a-kind concept in the world of golf. Designed by Tom Doak, the style of play is British, meaning a fast and firm heathland style. The Loop is reversible utilizing the same 18 holes. On odd calendar days play is clockwise on the black, on even days play is on the red counterclockwise. Red is the more traditional design with the starting holes offering a chance to warm up while the black offers a tough start with an easier finish. Electric carts are now allowed on The Loop.

The original Forest Dunes course opened in 2002 was designed in the parkland style by British Open Champion Tom Weiskopf. It is a classic course with modern features. Weiskopf has stated he considers it to be one of the top three courses he’s been involved with in the U.S. Golfers are challenged by the design as well as the hardwoods, pines, trees, dunes, scruffy sand, water and meadow.

The Bootlegger is a 10-hole short course designed for fun in relationship to par. Named for the infamous Detroit “Purple Gang” of the Prohibition era, the Bootlegger opened in 2020 with a daily rate greens fee based on availability.

Forest Dunes also offers Golfers a no cost putting course. The public is invited to play the HillTop, an 18 hole course on 2 acres. They just need to bring their putter and a ball. Golfers also enjoy a spacious clubhouse, Bootlegger Bar, golf shop and practice area. As the Director of Operations Don Helinski said, “Forest Dunes is designed to be a golf-centric experience for the public.”
