Originally started in June 2021, the bookstore opened in its retail space in January 2022.
Owner Nyshell Lawrence is the Black, female sole business owner.
She shared that she opened the bookstore with the intention of celebrating Black women and Black literature.
Yet, celebrating this genre is not in any way a “slight” to others. “We celebrate all people,” said Lawrence.
She named the business Socialight Society which is an expression of her intent.
“I wanted to create Socialight Society to be a reminder to people to be the light in someone else’s life.
When people gather together the world can be a better place,” says Lawrence.
A first-time store owner, Lawrence was involved in service-based businesses in the past.
But she always loved reading and writing and grew up around bookstores.
Her father worked the 3rd shift, so they were able to spend a lot of time together at local bookstores.
Her mother also started bookstores inside local Churches.
Lawrence says it’s funny, but she didn’t even think about these influences until she started her own bookstore.
Socialight Society’s celebration of people is building community.
The bookstore hosts a monthly book club plus a wide range of events including story time for children; Black business mixers; book release celebrations; book signings; readings by authors; key speaking events with influential women including Senator Sarah Anthony, Judge Kristen Simmons, CEOs, and others; poetry, game, and movie nights, and pop-up events – all to bring people together. https://www.socialightsociety.com/upcoming-events
Socialight Soeity is a family-centric bookstore. Lawrence’s daughters are involved as well as her sister and parents.

The last Saturday in April is a celebration of independent bookstores each year.
This year it’s April 27th . Socialight Society will be joining in with a special, local celebration.
