The Food and Drug Administration has released new standards that may help more women detect breast cancer sooner. This new standard is vital since it’s known that the identification of dense breast tissue can be an indication of slightly greater risk for breast cancer.

The new rules require mammogram providers to notify women nationally if they have dense breast tissue. It’s also the recommendation that women consult with their doctors as to whether additional screening will be needed.

The new standards are required within 18 months (guidelines released March, 2023).
